NEW The Sundae Presents on Heart and Souls (1993) w/ special guest

Video van men, set up and payoff, and Robert Downey Jr being a vaudeville kid

In the newest episode of The Sundae Presents, Dean Buckley and I were joined by very special guest Conor Hogan (co-host of Friday Film Showcased). Conor has seen more films than the two of us put together, so appropriately enough, he got us to watch a film neither of us had ever heard of.

You probably haven’t heard of it either. But you should have! Robert Downey Jr. gives a central performance which has been called “worth the price of admission.” On this podcast, no less.

It’s Heart and Souls, baby! You can listen and find all the details here.

I wrote about my love of bad singing over on The Sundae!

and a classic from the archives…

parting recs

Watch: The all-but-forgotten early John Ford joint Just Pals (1920) — so early that he was “Jack Ford,” and which Charlie Chaplin surely watched before he decided to make The Kid.

Listen: The soundtrack for Beyond The Valley of the Dolls.

Read: Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry by Leanne Shapton uses the format of an auction catalogue to tell the story of a relationship through the objects it accumulates. Quietly devastating.

Check out otherwise: If you get a chance to see (or read, in a pinch?) Inter Alia, Suzie Miller’s follow-up to Prima Facie, you definitely should. I saw the National Theatre Live broadcast and loved it. Complements the previous in a really compelling way by approaching sexual violence and the law from the opposite end.
