My favourite discoveries of last year
Movies! They're the best!
Every year on The Sundae, when everyone else is busy thinking about the films that came out in the year just gone, we look back on all the other films we watched. We write short pieces about each film and compile them in a fun list. It’s one of my favourite traditions.
Our favourite discoveries of 2024 include melodramas, musicals, Michael Mann and motorcycle pictures, not to mention action movies courtesy of both Tom Cruise and North Korea. You can read it here. (You can find the previous years’ installments here.)
I also want to note, the relative fame of the movies chosen may leave you to believe that Dean both has seen and continues to watch a lot more films than me. This could not be further from the truth.
parting recs
Listen: Sold a Story is a podcast about the history and present of teaching literacy to children, by which I mean, it’s a terrifying true crime narrative about the corrupt incentives of those who profit from educational strategies, and their power to dupe others. It is incredible.
Watch: I wrote about my love of Wallace and Gromit a couple of years back, and I’ll admit to worrying that their triumphant return this Christmas might not turn out as triumphant as I hoped. But Vengeance Most Fowl is an unmitigated delight, a worthy follow-up to The Wrong Trousers — which is one of the highest compliments I can give.
Read: I finally read Orlando by Virginia Woolf recently. It is, obviously, a radical and still audacious act of gender, but nobody had told me that it is a very funny parody of the conventions of the literary biography.
Check out otherwise: I dunno, Piss Christ? It is probably my favourite artwork of all time.
