I talked about The Breakfast Club on Why This Film?

It's the best film of all time as you know

Why This Film? is a podcast looking at each film in the Criterion Collection, and when Ron asked me to be on, I naturally chose The Breakfast Club.

Not to oversell, but I was pretty down in the week or so before recording this and it was such a delightful experience that it turned my whole perspective around. I freaking love movies! I love getting to talk about them and write about them and think about them! I’m so lucky!

Check it out:

Dean and I talked about Meet Me in St. Louis on The Sundae Presents!

I wrote about some of my favourite lefty westerns for Current Affairs.

I squeezed a hundred words for all they were worth to explain why Superman = Ralph Nader in MUBI’s annual Fantasy Double Features Poll. Scroll down or ctrl +f or read the whole thing, but definitely read my bit!

and a classic from the archives…

The Joy of Soviet Sherlock Holmes (and Dr. Watson), originally written for Emily St. James’s Episodes newsletter in 2021 and republished on The Sundae in 2023.

parting recs

Watch: The Last Showgirl made me cry a weird amount for reasons I can’t explain. Pair with The Killing of a Chinese Bookie if you love people obsessively committed to their bad art.

Listen: Best Buds by Mom Jeans. Midwest emo… winter.

Read: The Big Clock by Kenneth Fearing. Podcast in train, get ready.
